Vaastu Tips for Villas: What to Check in a Floor Plan

For many families in Bengaluru, Vaastu Shastra shapes which villa they buy. A villa gives you more to check than an apartment: plot shape, entrance, staircase, garden and several floors. This guide lists the points buyers most often look at in a floor plan, and how to balance them with everyday living.

Vaastu traditions vary between families and consultants. Treat this as a checklist of commonly followed guidelines, and consult your own Vaastu advisor for firm decisions.

1. Plot shape and slope

Square and rectangular plots are generally preferred over irregular shapes. Many Vaastu followers also look at the natural slope of the land, with a preference for ground sloping towards the north or east. In a gated project, ask for the site plan showing your plot’s shape and orientation.

2. Main entrance direction

3. Kitchen

The south-east corner is the traditional preference for the kitchen, as it is associated with fire. North-west is a common alternative. Check where the cooking platform sits, since many followers prefer the cook to face east.

4. Master bedroom

The south-west is the usual preferred zone for the master bedroom. In a multi-floor villa, check both where the master bedroom sits on the plan and which floor it is on.

5. Pooja room

The north-east corner is widely preferred for a prayer room or pooja space. If the plan has no dedicated room, see whether a north-east corner of the living area could work.

6. Staircase

Staircases are commonly placed in the south, west or south-west. Many followers avoid a staircase in the centre of the house or in the north-east.

7. Toilets and water

Toilets are generally kept out of the north-east. Underground water tanks are often preferred in the north-east, and overhead tanks in the south-west.

8. Open space and garden

Villas offer a chance to keep more open space to the north and east, which Vaastu followers often prefer, and to plant heavier trees on the south and west sides.

Balancing Vaastu with daily life

Very few plans meet every guideline. Rank what matters most to your family, usually the entrance, kitchen and master bedroom, and be flexible on the rest. Also weigh natural light, ventilation, privacy and room sizes. A plan that is perfect on paper but dark and cramped is hard to live in.
